CHAPTER 7

Poor Candice was pale and shaky. Her hands trembled as she showed me around the reception desk, pointing out surrender forms, adoption request forms and the frequently called numbers lists. “You won’t need to do much,” she said apologetically. “Just sit here and if anyone comes in, get them to fill out a form. The adoption tours get booked in here,” she said, clicking on a calendar icon on the laptop. “If there’s a surrender, call Daniel or Wendy, they’ll come get the animal and process them in.”

I shushed her. “Go home, Candice. You’re not well. I’ve got this covered, don’t worry.”

She rubbed her forehead absently. “Yeah. I know I should. I’ve got no idea what happened to me last night.” She looked embarrassed. “Apparently I passed out in an alleyway behind my friend’s bar.”

“You’re stressed,” I told her bossily. “You’re burnt out. You probably collapsed from exhaustion. Go home and rest.”

She inhaled shakily and nodded. “That’s a good idea. You’re right, I’ve been really stressed. There’s been so much drama going on here lately, it’s been… a lot.”

With a little effort, I rearranged my expression into one of sympathy. I just wanted her to leave so I could raid her laptop files. “Yes, I guess it would be tough. Your volunteers are dying on you, and turning into ghosts.”

“Yes, well,” she muttered, turning away. “I was more worried that he was stealing from us. I had these terrible suspicions…” she trailed off, shaking her head. “I had no idea what I was going to do about him. Then he shows up dead…”

“And now Daniel is convinced he’s haunting the clinic.”

“Yeah.” She huffed out a breath. “It really has been a little crazy around here lately.”

“Go home,” I ordered. “We’ll call you if we need you. I’ll sit here and look pretty, and if anything goes wrong, I’ll call Wendy or Daniel.”

“Thanks.” She gave me one last tentative smile, and walked away.

From my position on the desk, I could see out the glass double-doors, right into the public car park out front. I watched her walk around towards the staff park out the back, and waited until I spotted her car drive away.

To my left, I could see down the hallway where the animal hospital was located, and I could see a peek of the treatment room where Daniel was helping Wendy with another neutering. Idly, I wondered where they were storing all the dead pets that couldn’t be cremated while the incinerator was not working. Maybe they were in the freezer.

To the right, the double doors to the kennels were wide open, and I could see a few poor, unwanted strays looking sad and lonely inside their crates. Susan, the giant Cane Corso, lay forlornly on her side while Deimos, in a playful mood, dive-bombed her and pulled on her ears. Their crate had a cheery sign fixed to the gate, which said Sorry, I’m Unavailable for Adoption.

The coast was clear.

I exited out of the calendar on the computer and looked through the files.
